The
Positive and Responsible Opportunties for Student To Youth Leader Enterprise
(P.R.O. S.T.Y.L.E.) is a dynamic new anti-bullying or "pro-social behavior"
program initiated by the School District of Philadelphia through their
Office of School Climate and Safety. The program seeks to attract, recruit,
and train high school students to be leaders of their school and their
community so that they can in turn, positively affect and influence their
peers, family members, and neighbors about the benefits of pro-social
behavior.
Concerned with the rising violence within the City of Philadelphia and
particularly in the public high schools, NBA star Willie Green of the
Philadelphia through his community marketing representatives at Pro Sports
Community Consultants decided to tackle the issue of bullying and working
directly with Philadelphia high school students in promoting positive social
behavior.
As the public star and community leader of the P.R.O. S.T.Y.L.E program,
Willie interacts regularly with those high school students who have taken
the challenge of being leaders in the anti-bullying and anti-violence
movement. As part of his direct commitment to the program, Willie meets with
members of the P.R.O. S.T.Y.L.E teams from each participating high school
(Kensington High School for Creative and Performing Arts-CAPA and Motivation
High School) attending their student leadership training sessions (or Power
Leadership Clinics), general body student assemblies, and other activities
at the school in an effort to promote and reinforce pro-social behavior.
"Negative student-to-student interaction and bullying can only be countered
by reaching out to the students themselves. Most of the time, the students
are doing things that are so natural and accepted in every day life around
the neighborhood that they don't even realize that it negatively affect
their peers in the form of bullying in the classroom or in the school yard.
We have to reach out to the students and first let them know we care about
them. Next we recognize them as leaders with a bright future and then
develop them. Finally, we send them back to their peers to train and convert
others"......Willie Green P.R.O. S.T.Y.L.E. Celebrity Team Leader.
►THE WILLIE GREEN STUDENT TO STUDENT
CULTURAL EXCHANGE PROGRAM
The Student to Student Cultural Exchange Program is one of the highlight
programs sponsored by the Willie Green Foundation. The program seeks to
bring students from Philadelphia together with students from Detroit for a
cultural and educational exchange. This annual program begins by the Willie
Green Foundation officials selecting two groups of high school students from
Philadelphia and Detroit at the start of the school year. Each group of
students are required to begin a journal of their high school and community
experiences as well as highlight their favorite cultural aspects of their
lives, their neighborhoods, and their cities.
When Willie and the Philadelphia 76ers return to his hometown of Detroit to
play the Detroit Pistons during the regular NBA season, the students from
Philadelphia will travel by bus to Detroit where they will stay overnight in
Detroit. During their trip, they will connect with students from Detroit and
share in a roundtable discussion about life between the two cities and their
experiences growing up in a Midwest urban city. Visiting students will also
take a tour of Detroit's cultural sights including the Charles H. Wright
African- American History Museum in addition to watching the 76ers play the
Detroit Pistons with tickets provided by the Willie Green Foundation.
Of course the cultural experience and student interaction is reciprocated
when the Detroit Pistons (or some other selected team) come to Philadelphia
to play the Philadelphia 76ers. This time, it is Detroit area students who
come and visit Philadelphia by bus. They are hosted by Philadelphia high
school students for a student-to -student exchange before setting off for a
tour of cultural history in Philadelphia that will include a tour of
African-American History Museum of Philadelphia. They will also be treated
to an overnight hotel stay in Philadelphia and tickets to the 76ers home
basketball game courtesy of the Willie Green Foundation.
